Bach and Friends

When first composed, J.S. Bach's ravishing church cantatas were performed not by massive choirs of mixed voices, but by small ensembles of men and boys. This sound has rarely been heard in the twentieth century. In 1999 Chicago Baroque Ensemble will revive the choral tradition of the Cantor of Leipzig with a performance of Cantata #61, featuring a nine-voice voice chamber choir. Soloists will be tenor Calland Metts, bass Andrew Schultze, and boy soprano Nathan Fivecoate.

o Saturday performance begins at 8:00 p.m. at Blair Chapel, Fourth Presbyterian Church, 115 East Delaware, Chicago.

o The Sunday performance begins at 4:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Church of Evanston, 1330 Ridge Avenue, Evanston

Schrader plays Rameau

David Schrader, CBE's own harpsichord virtuoso, is featured in a performance of the complete Pièces de claveçin en concert. These witty and difficult works are musical portraits of Rameau's friends and a virtual guide to the brilliant salon society of Regency Paris. They are a perfect vehicle for the refined virtuosity of CBE's musicians.

o Saturday performance begins at 8:00 p.m. at Blair Chapel, Fourth Presbyterian Church, 115 East Delaware, Chicago.

o The Sunday performance begins at 4:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Church of Evanston, 1330 Ridge Avenue, Evanston
